What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is the insertion of thin needles into specific points on the body to cause a desired healing effect.

How does the treatment work?

Acupuncture works with the body’s life-energy, or chi. Chi flows in well-defined pathways throughout the body. Acupuncture points are places where the energy flow tends to get disrupted. Pain, illness and discomfort are symptoms of blocked energy flow. After the causes and origins of the blockage are identified, the chi is accessed through particular points. The balanced flow is carefully encouraged, and as harmonious flow is restored, symptoms fade or disappear.

What can Acupuncture treat?

Acupuncture can treat back pain, neck and shoulder pain, repetitive stress syndrome, carpal tunnel syndrome, insomnia, migraines and headaches, alcohol, food and tobacco addiction, sprains, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, respiratory problems, digestive problems, gynecological disorders, circulatory disorders and nervous system disorders.

Is Acupuncture safe?

Acupuncture is extremely safe with no unpleasant side effects. It does not interfere with any medical treatments you may already be receiving. On occasion, patients may receive a slight bruise or feel momentary light headedness, but this is very rare.

What are Acupuncture needles like?

Acupuncture needles are very thin. The thickness is comparable to a strand of hair. Because the needles are so thin, they rarely cause damage to the tissue. Many clients cannot feel them at all. The needles are sterilized before the session and disposed of following the session to ensure a completely safe environment.

Will there be any downtime?

There is no downtime following Acupuncture. Most clients feel relaxed and comfortable when the session is completed.

How soon will results appear?

Some people notice benefits immediately while others need multiple treatments before they feel a difference.

How long does an Acupuncture treatment last?

An Acupuncture session usually lasts 30 minutes to an hour.

How does the treatment feel?

There is generally an overall sense of relaxation. The pin pricks are so small that no discomfort should be felt. If a pin prick is felt, the sensation is similar to a small mosquito bite.

Is additional treatment necessary?

Additional treatment may be necessary. Depending on duration, severity and nature of the ailment as well as overall health, five to fifteen treatments may be needed. Degenerative conditions may require further treatments over an extended period of time.

Instructions for before treatment:

Wear loose clothing with minimal jewelry and no makeup.

Instructions for after treatment:

Do not eat a large meal immediately after the treatment, and do not over-exercise. Avoid alcohol or sedatives for four hours after treatment as well as nicotine or caffeine for an hour after treatment. For the first few visits you may feel tired and very relaxed, so you may wish to plan a rest period after the session.
